That Was Cold!

Me: Hi, I'm calling to check on Princess.

Nurse: One moment.

Nurse: This is C

Me: I'm calling to see how Princess is doing.

Nurse: Is this her foster mother?

Me: Yes

Nurse: Well she was extubated about 30 minutes ago.

Me: Really, how did she do?

Nurse: well, she's holding her own right now, but last time it took her 48 hours for her to poop out, so well see!

I swear, that was an exact quote! Are nurses that cold with all patients' parents, or is it just cause I'm a foster mom and I don't have feelings?

As you can guess, I was not comforted by those words. . .

I think sometimes they have to disconnect. It's a tough occupation. Not that it makes it right.

Maybe that nurse was just having a bad day. Geez a little compassion, someone really cares bout this little girl, you'd think they would be rejoicing with it!

Yeah, I have to say that I would imagine they are in the wrong job if they don't care about the kids at least a little, so maybe just a bad day?

I'm sorry she made it so clear you are her FOSTER mother. Like you didn't already know that, right?

I really hope she does OK without the tube!!

None of the nurses we ever dealt with in NICU were that coarse. I would say that a letter to the director of nursing might be in order. It's important they treat the child's family well. Regardless of whether that is a first family, a foster family, grandparents, whatever. Their family is all they have.

Oh, she sucks. Weren't the very nurses commenting on how Princess had no one and now they're making you feel bad about not giving birth to them? I agree with Happy Mama, write a letter to the director. If she's this cold to you on the phone, I don't even want to imagine what she would do to the children when she has bad days.

She wasn't having a bad day. This nurse wasn't to nice to me another time I called. I just waited for shift change last night to talk to a different nurse, who said she was doing well.

I am confused as to what the nurse said to make you think she meant this, "they're making you feel bad about not giving birth to them". Due to hippa laws they need to verify who they are speaking to before giving out information. Aside from that whats so bad about being a foster mom, sometimes foster moms are better than biological moms. I hope your child is well and thrives, bless you and yours!

    Anonymous,

I gave her my name when I called, so she knew who I was.
